Designed to prepare pharmacists with the knowledge and skills to assume positions of leadership in healthcare, the 24-month program offers a unique learning, teaching and collaboration opportunities to obtain a M.S. in Pharmacy Administration with a focus on Pharmacy Leadership from the University of Houston College of Pharmacy and concurrently complete residency training (PGY1/PGY2) from the following Texas Medical Center Institutions: the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center, the Harris County Hospital District, Memorial Hermann Health Care System, The Methodist Hospital and St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital.

As a new program, the Residency in Pharmacy Administration from the Texas Medical Center Institutions is not currently accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and but is currently participating in the ASHP Matching. ASHP accreditation shall be sought and, when conferred, shall be applied retroactively to include the first year class of the PGY2 program. Please contact residency directors for additional details.
Requirements for acceptance include a pharmacy degree and eligibility for Texas State licensure by the first of September for the residency portion. An on-site interview will be required.
Requirements for the MS program include a bachelor’s or a professional degree.
Application packet must be received by January 15, 2010 for the Concurrent MS and residency program. Applicants will be contacted by January 31, 2010 to set up an on-site interview with residency sites. Interviews will be conducted during February/March.

- Three (3) Letters of Recommendation in sealed envelopes (Email Option: If one or more letters cannot be included in the packet, applicants may ask the recommender to email the letter to pharmad@uh.edu. Please include “Recommendation Letter for MS/Residency Applicant _____” in the Subject Line of the email.)
- Two passport-size photographs
- Certified Photocopy of GRE or GMAT scores, if available (if mailed separately, GRE/GMAT scores must be received no later than March 1, 2009.)
(NOTE: In addition to submitting a Certified Photocopy of GRE or GMAT scores to the UH College of Pharmacy M.S. Program Office for receipt by March 1, 2010, applicants ALSO must request that the Exam Administrator submit Original GRE or GMAT scores directly to the University of Houston - CODE 6870)

Step 4:
If the applicant has not yet taken the GRE or GMAT, he or she is encouraged to take it as early as possible. The deadline for receipt of GRE or GMAT scores (Original AND a Certified Photocopy) is March 1, 2010.
If the GRE or GMAT already has been taken, a Certified Photocopy should be mailed with the Application Packet (as noted in Step 3) and an Official copy of the scores sent directly to the University of Houston (CODE 6870) by the Exam Administrator.

As a member of one of the world's largest integrated health care systems, the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) serves as the primary health care provider for more than 103,000 veterans in southeast Texas. Located on a 118-acre campus and built in 1991, MEDVAMC is a state-of-the-art facility with 352 hospital beds, a 40-bed Spinal Cord Injury Center, and a 120-bed transitional care center for long-term care (includes five palliative care beds). MEDVAMC also uses robotic helpmates that transport medications and supplies from the pharmacy to various nursing units within the hospital. Pharmacy Practice Residents will have various experiential opportunities and a significant role in a well established, multidisciplinary Anticoagulation and Pharmacotherapy Clinic at the MEDVAMC.

The Harris County Hospital District provides more than 1 million health care visits each year to residents of Harris County, the nation's third most-populous county. The hospital district operates Ben Taub General Hospital, Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital, Quentin Mease Community Hospital, 12 community health centers, a dental center, eight school-based clinics, 13 homeless shelter clinics and five mobile health units. The HCHD Department of Pharmacy prides itself in providing comprehensive, cost-effective pharmaceutical care to its patients through deployment of more than 400 full-time employees. The Department of Pharmacy provides pharmaceutical care in all patient care settings. These services include unit dose drug distribution, IV admixture preparation, chemotherapy admixtures, investigational drug studies, outpatient prescriptions, disease state management, clinical programs, training and education, and drug information for the patient and other health care providers.

Memorial Hermann Healthcare System is a collection of 14 Hospitals, all within the greater Houston area, and one of the largest not-for-profit systems in the nation. Clinical specialists maintain active practices in surgical/trauma, neurosciences, cardiology/cardiovascular surgery, internal medical, transplant, neonatal, and pediatric critical care environments as well as internal medicine and general surgery. Clinical Pharmacy Residencies rotations are held at MH TMC, MH SW, and Children's. Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital serve as the primary teaching site for The University of Texas Medical School at Houston. The residency programs also maintain relationships with the University of Houston College of Pharmacy, which provides clinical and operational experiences for pharmacy students.

St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital (SLEH), home to The Texas Heart Institute, ranks 6th among the top 10 cardiology and heart surgery centers in the nation by U.S. News & World Report for the 16th consecutive year and recently placed among the top five academic medical centers in the nation based on high performance in quality and safety as measured by the University Health System Consortium (UHC). St. Luke's is a tertiary care teaching hospital licensed for 888 beds with 48 operating rooms and 143 critical care beds. The Department of Pharmacy utilizes a cartless, decentralized distribution and clinical pharmacy services model with extensive automation in the pharmacy and on the patient care units. Clinical Pharmacist Coordinators maintain advanced practices in critical care, pulmonology, cardiology, neurosciences, emergency medicine, renal transplant, nephrology, liver transplant, cardiothoracic transplant, hematology/oncology, infectious diseases and internal medicine. Use of bedside bar code medication administration, computerized prescriber order entry and an automated supply chain model promotes best practices to maximize safety and quality with the support of a team of pharmacy informatics and medication safety specialists.
The residency program includes a series of rotations designed to provide comprehensive core-learning of diseases and drug therapy issues as well as experiences in practice management and policy development. Administrative and management experiences are designed to develop a core skill set for future leaders of the profession. Experiential rotations in human resources management, operations management, strategic planning, financial management, supply chain management, organizational dynamics and budget planning are designed to develop leadership capabilities.
