Sharanya Murty,
M.S. ('07), and UHCOP Associate
Professor Sujit S. Sansgiry,
Ph.D., recently received a 2008
Presentation Merit Award for
Contributed Research Paper from
the American Pharmacists Association
Academy of Pharmacy Practice
and Management. The award was
in recognition of their project,
"New Information Card Labels
to Improve Consumer Comprehension
for Behind-the-Counter Pseudoephedrine
Products." Murty is now working
toward her Ph.D. at The University
of Texas Health Science Center
at Houston's School of Public
Health. Sansgiry also was a
member of the research team
that won the same award in 2007.

J. Woo, R.Ph. ('91),
UHCOP clinical assistant professor
and director of Ambulatory Based
Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences,
has been named the 2008-09 President-Elect
of the Phi Lambda Sigma pharmacy
leadership honor society. Woo
serves as an advisor for the
UH's Upsilon chapter of PLS.

Member Explores Fragile X Syndrome

Assistant Professor Maria
Victoria (MariVi) Tejada-Simon,
Ph.D., M.S., M.Ed. ('07), has
received a one-year, $60,000
grant from the FRAXA Research
Foundation to support her research
into the role played by small
GTPases in the aberrant neuronal
morphology associated with Fragile
X and other mental retardation
syndromes. Using pharmacology,
biochemistry, electrophysiology,
behavior and genetics as research
tools, her laboratory will explore
the Rac-dependent regulation
of neuronal morphology in Fragile
X syndrome. FRAXA Research Foundation
is a non-profit organization
dedicated to funding biomedical
research for improved treatment
and, ultimately, a cure for
Fragile X. Fragile X is not
only the leading inherited cause
of mental retardation, but it
is also one of the most common
single-gene diseases in humans.

Wins Third Consecutive TSHP
Student Poster Title

student Ann Marie Prazak
and co-author Steven
E. Pass, Pharm.D.,
UHCOP clinical assistant professor,
won first place in the Student
category of the Texas Society
of Health-system Pharmacists
- Research Poster Competition
in April. Their entry was titled,
"Utility of Gram Stain from
a Protected Mini-BAL in Guiding
Empiric Therapy for Ventilator
Associated Pneumonia (VAP)."
The win marks the third consecutive
year UHCOP students have won
the competition.

recently presented Dean Sunny
E. Ohia, Ph.D., with a $10,000
gift to support annual scholarships
for pharmacy students. Walgreens
has provided more than $10,000
per year in annual scholarships
since 2001 and more than $275,000
in total support for scholarships
and sponsorship of various programs
and events at the college since
1980.

Dean's Advisory Council. A longtime
member of DAC, Spier succeeds

M. Cuellar, M.S. ('79),
R.Ph. ('73), FASHP, senior executive
director of medical support
services, director of pharmacy
and patient safety officer at
Memorial Hermann TIRR.
Cuellar was recognized for her
five years of service as DAC
member and chair - the first
woman appointed to the leadership
position - at the council's
Spring meeting at UH.
