Tam Earns Award for Research & Scholarship Excellence

Vincent H. Tam, Pharm.D., BCPS, who recently was promoted to associate professor with tenure, has received the university's 2008 Excellence in Research & Scholarship Award at the Assistant Professor level. Tam was recognized for his research expertise that has "significantly contributed to the understanding of how to correctly use antimicrobial and limit the emergence of antibiotic resistance, exhibiting potential for significant human health implications."

Alumna Accepts APhA-HRSA Program Leadership Post

UH College of Pharmacy alumna Lisa M. Scholz, (Pharm.D. '01), MBA, has joined the American Pharmacists Association as Senior Director of the HRSA Pharmacy Services Support Center, a program established between the APhA and the Health Resources and Services Administration Office of Pharmacy Affairs. Before accepting the national post, Scholz served as the administrative director of pharmacy operations for the Harris County Hospital District in Houston.

State Coordinating Board Awards 2 Grants to UHCOP

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has awarded two-year Advanced Research Program grants to two UH College of Pharmacy faculty members. Malavosklish "Liz" Bikram, Ph.D., assistant professor of pharmaceutics, received a $149,234 grant for "Stealth Targeted MR Molecular Probes for Cancer Detection," and Tahir Hussain, associate professor of pharmacology, received a $150,000 grant for research into the "Role of Angiotensin II AT2 Receptor in Blood Pressure Regulation in Obesity and Diabetes."

Tarrant County Association Adds $15,000 to Scholarship

The Tarrant County Pharmacy Association has supplemented its existing scholarship endowment at the UH College of Pharmacy with a gift of $15,000. A component of the Texas Pharmacy Association, the TCPA represents pharmacists from the counties of Hood, Johnson, Parker and Tarrant. Dedicated to providing services and support to future and current pharmacists, the purpose of the TCPA scholarship is to assist bright, young pharmacy students from the Tarrant County area offset the expenses of a pharmacy education.

College, Alumni Association Salute Tournament Sponsors

UH College of Pharmacy alumni and friends took their best swing in support of students at the 29th Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament on June 2 at Augusta Pines Golf Club in Spring, Texas. The team of Jimmy Washburn, David Curlee (B.S. '75), Dan Metzen and Jeff Hall (Pharm.D. '02) won the Low Net Score title; and the team of Jim Rutan (B.S. '92), Chuck Kneip (B.S. '92), John Rutan and John Hargroue won the Low Gross Score title. This year's tournament sponsors were: Walgreens - Gold ($2,500); Marco Carranza, (Pharm.D. '03), McKesson Pharmaceutical & Healthmart Pharmacies, McClaugherty Consulting Services, Randalls/Safeway Inc., Windsor Village United Methodist Church and CVS Corporation - Silver ($1,000); Medicine Chest and Mylan Laboratories Inc. -Red & White ($500); and Continental Airlines, Julianna Szilagyi, Hyatt Regency, UH Hilton and Hilton Westchase - in-kind donations and other gifts.

Class of 2008 Features 109 Pharm.D. Graduates

The College of Pharmacy graduated 109 Doctor of Pharmacy students at the May 10 Commencement ceremonies, which featured Distinguished Alumnus W. Benjamin "Ben" Fry, R.Ph. (’72), FIACP, FACA, president of the Texas State Board of Pharmacy and independent pharmacy owner. Approximately one-third of the ’08 Pharm.D. graduates are pursuing PGY1 or PGY2 clinical residency programs throughout the U.S. In addition to the May graduates, four Pharm.D. students, one Ph.D. student and 13 M.S. students are slated to graduate in August.

Pharmacy Alumni Post Largest Annual Membership Gain

UH College of Pharmacy alumni are reconnecting in a big way, with the Pharmacy Alumni Association posting the largest increase in the number of annual memberships of all UH alumni groups. Nearly 50 alumni - an increase of 24 percent - joined the Houston Alumni Organization, which includes membership in the Pharmacy group, between April 2007 and April 2008. HAO/PAA membership provides such benefits as invitiations to special UH events and discounts on insurance. UH Student Wins Award for Online Portfolio

UH Pharm.D. student Laura Edmundson was one of only 28 students nationwide to receive a 2008 RXportfolio National Achievement Award. The award recognizes pharmacy students for creating exceptional RXportfolios, an online student portfolio service that allows students to post their CV/resume, employment history, goals, and other personal, academic and professional activities. Since 2006, all UHCOP pharmacy students are responsible for creating and maintaining the confidential online portfolios as an employment and networking resource.
