Pharmacy Dean Candidates Named for Campus

The UH College of Pharmacy Dean Search Committee has named four candidates to participate in two-day campus visits and open forums during April. The candidates are Vincent Lau, Ph.D., John & Rebecca Moores Professor and Chair of the Department of Pharmacological & Pharmaceutical Sciences at UH College of Pharmacy; Richard Leff, Professor and Regional Dean of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Pharmacy at Dallas/Fort Worth; Lamar Pritchard, former Professor & Dean of the University of Louisiana at Monroe College of Pharmacy; and Lloyd Young, Professor Emeritus and former Chair, University of California-San Francisco Department of Clinical Pharmacy. UH Student Places Second in National Patient

UH Pharm.D. student Matt Baker earned second place in the National Patient Counseling Competition at the American Pharmacists Association annual meeting in San Antonio. Baker's performance in counseling a patient on Prozac for depression earned him a spot among the top 10 finalists, and he secured the first runner-up position with his counseling of a patient on issues related to the use of Maxalt MLT for migraines. Baker took first place in the UH competition in January, which earned him the opportunity to represent the college at the national level.

Woo Inducted as National President of Phi Lambda Sigma |
UH College of Pharmacy faculty member and alumna May Woo, R.Ph. ('91), was inducted as National President of the Phi Lambda Sigma pharmacy leadership fraternity at the organization's annual meeting in San Antonio. In addition to serving as co-advisor for the UH chapter of PLS, Woo is a Clinical Assistant Professor and the Director of Ambulatory Based Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences at the college.

UH Kappa Psi Chapter Wins Province Awards, Elections |
UH College of Pharmacy's Delta Delta chapter of the Kappa Psi pharmaceutical co-ed fraternity won several awards and officer positions at the national organization's Province VII meeting. UH students elected to Province posts were Thomas Key - Vice Satrap; Kyana Stewart - Secretary; and Amber Dwairy - Webmaster. The UH chapter also won the Man-Mile Award, which is based on the number of members attending the meeting multiplied by the distance traveled, and the most aluminum can tabs collected (more than 40 pounds) for the Ronald McDonald House in St. Louis.

May 1 Symposium Offers Infectious Diseases

Emerging infectious diseases, prevention and detection of Clostridium difficile infection, managing outpatient infections in cancer patients, and an overview of promising antimicrobial agents are some of the topics to be addressed at the 2009 Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy Symposium on Friday, May 1. The symposium will be 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Houston Marriott Medical Center, 6580 Fannin. The cost is $55 for professionals, who are eligible for 6 Contact Hours (0.6 CEUs), but free for students, residents and fellows. The deadline to register is April 24.
