UH Signs
Collaboration Agreement with Belize
University UH
College of Pharmacy and the
University of Belize Faculty
of Nursing & Allied Health
recently approved a memorandum
of understanding to explore
potential joint academic training
programs and research projects
for students and faculty members.
The agreement with UB is one
of several similar initiatives
currently in development between
UHCOP and academic-research
institutions from around the
world.

Student Awarded Fellowship for
Flavonoid Research
Ph.D.
student Rashim Singh
recently received a $30,000
Pharmacoinformatics Fellowship
from the Gulf Coast Consortia
in support of her research on
flavonoids, a class of compounds
long-suspected of possessing
anti-aging and anti-cancer health
benefits. Flavonoids are found
in various foods, including
chocolate, tea, onions, red
wine and an assortment of fruits
and berries, but the compounds
are poorly absorbed in the human
body. Working under the supervision
of UHCOP Professor and fellow
flavonoid researcher Ming Hu,
Ph.D., Singh is developing a
computational model to predict
the rate and extent of flavonoid
absorption.
Hu Examines
Anti-tumor Properties of Chinese
Herbal Mixture UHCOP
Professor Ming Hu,
Ph.D., has received research
funding from the National Institutes
of Health in collaboration with
colleagues at Washington University
to examine the anti-tumor properties
of a Chinese herbal mixture
called Zeng Sheng Ping (aka
Anti-tumor B). The research
team is studying the mechanisms
and active components of anti-tumor
B in preparation for future
clinical trials in the treatment
of lung and esophageal cancers.

Student Wins NCPA 'Partners
in Pharmacy' Scholarship
Fourth-year
Pharm.D. student Roy
Hendley has received
a Partners in Pharmacy Scholarship
from the National Community
Pharmacists Association Foundation.
Named for the Partners in Pharmacy,
an auxiliary organization initially
started in 1915 by the wives
of NCPA pharmacist members,
the scholarship recognizes academic
achievement, community service
and a demonstrated interest
in independent community pharmacy.
Hendley was a member of the
UH team that placed third in
NCPA's Business Plan Competition
last year.

Regional Delegate Position Goes
to UH Student Second-year
pharmacy student Simi Bassett
has joined the growing ranks
of student leaders from UH,
with her election to Regional
Delegate of the American Pharmacists
Association-Academy of Student
Pharmacists. Bassett won the
post at the APhA-ASP’s
Mid-Year Regional Meeting (Region
VI) held earlier this month
in Houston, which was hosted
by UHCOP for the second time
in three years.

Publications Win 4 Awards for
Design, Content
UHCOP's
2005 Annual Report and Pharm.D.
Student Recruitment Brochure,
both produced in 2006, have
won a total of four awards from
local or regional public relations/marketing
communications organizations.
Competing against public and
private institutions, corporations
and advertising agencies, the
annual report and brochure collected
a combined three 2007 "Bronze
Quill" awards from the International
Association of Business Communicators-Houston
chapter. The annual report also
won a Grand Award from the Council
for Advancement and Support
of Education-District IV, which
comprises public and private
high schools and universities
from five southwestern states
and Mexico. |
