Simpson Earns APhA-ASP Chapter Advisor Award
Lynn
Simpson, Pharm.D., associate
professor and executive vice chair
of practice programs, received
the 2007 Outstanding Chapter Advisor
Award from the American Pharmacists
Association-Academy of Student
Pharmacists at the organization's
annual meeting in Atlanta. A member
of the college's inaugural Pharm.D.
class, Simpson has served as the
UH chapter advisor since joining
the college faculty in 1996. Third-year
UH pharmacy student Jason
Lovero also earned national
honors at the event by winning
one of two National At-large seats
on the APhA-ASP National Executive
Committee.
UH Student Captures 2 First Place Wins at TSHP Meeting
UH pharmacy student Ngocanh "Jennifer" Phan won first-place awards in both the Disease State Management Competition and the Student Poster Competition at the 2007 Texas Society of Health-system Pharmacists annual meeting in San Antonio in April. This is the second consecutive year Phan has won the Disease State title, and the second year in a row that UH has won in the Poster category. Other UH winners at TSHP included: Clinical Skills Competition - Jim Getchell and Liz Franz (Second Place) and Simi Bassett and Christi Parker (1st Year Honorable Mention); 2007-08 Chair of the TSHP Student Section Executive Committee - Ann Marie Prazak; and Teddy Bear Drive - UH Student Society of Health-System Pharmacists (with 120 bears collected for children). Research Foundation's Secondary
Prevention Lipid Clinic (SPLC)
recently was recognized
as an "Outstanding Program" in
the 2007 Cardiovascular Health
Promotion Awards from the Texas
Council on Cardiovascular Disease
and Stroke. Kim Birtcher,
Pharm.D., UH clinical assistant
professor, serves as the SPLC's clinical
pharmacist and alumna Loriann
Furman (PharmD 03) serves
as the clinical pharmacy manager.
Providing healthy lifestyle education,
medication management and risk-factor
identification services to 1,200
high-risk cardiology patients,
the SPLC serves as a rotation
site for UH pharmacy students
as well as UH/Kelsey-Seybold pharmacy
practice residents.
Dean Ohia Among 2007 Mading Society Inductees
UH College of Pharmacy Dean Dr. Sunny E. Ohia and his wife, Dr. Ekanem Ohia, were among several generous college supporters inducted into the Mading Society for 2007. Also welcomed into the Society were, CVS/pharmacy (represented by Jeff and Sandy McClusky); Ruben and Rosemary Fonseca; Nicholas and Mauree Martino; John and May Gee; Dr. Mustafa F. and Sanu Lokhandwala; and Dr. James and Maria Elena Hesbrook. The College of Pharmacy recently recognized the contributions, leadership and professionalism of several alumni and students. The 2007 award winners are David DeVido - Distinguished Alumnus; Michelle Hamilton, Pharm.D. - Outstanding Young Alumna; Julie Spier - Volunteer of the Year; Todd Connor - Outstanding Student Leadership; and Katie Scholz - Distinguished Student.
Lewis, Tam Obtain Infectious Disease Research Grants

Pharm.D., recently received infectious
disease research grants from two
major pharmaceutical companies.
Lewis received a $90,700 research
grant from Merck & Co. for
his work on anti-infective drugs
in a murine model of acute invasive
Aspergillosis and Tam received
an $80,000 grant from Schering-Plough
Corp. to study the susceptibility
of Moxifloxacin to the "Inoculum
Effect."
