Tam Evaluates New Agent in Battle Against Staph Infection

UHCOP assistant professor Vincent H. Tam, Pharm.D., BCPS, has received new funding to support his research into the application of mathematical modeling and computer simulation to battle infectious diseases. With the $209,000 grant from AstraZeneca, Tam will investigate a new antimicrobial agent as a potential weapon against the highly aggressive Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Using pharmacodynamic modeling techniques, the project involves determining the index most closely associated with the antimicrobial agent's optimal killing or resistance suppression activity and estimating the probability of hitting the optimal target with various dosing regimens.
