Department
of Defense Taps Bikram for Ovarian
Cancer Research The
U.S. Department of Defense has
awarded a $111,750 research
grant to UHCOP's Malavosklish
"Liz" Bikram, Ph.D.,
assistant professor, to develop
new, tumor-specific contrast
agents for magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI) equipment in the
early detection of ovarian cancer.
Although the five-year survival
rate of ovarian cancer is more
than 90 percent with early detection,
the rate of detection is less
than 20 percent. Bikram's research
will examine the use of iron-oxide
nanoparticles to develop a highly
sensitive method for early detection
of the disease that killed an
estimated 15,000 women in the
U.S. in 2007.
