Pharmacy in Stephenville, Texas,
and member of the UHCOP Dean's
Advisory Council, was installed
as President of the Texas Pharmacy
Association at the organization's
annual conference in July. In
addition, alumna Carrie
Sacky, R.Ph. (BS '80)
of Sunnyvale, Texas, received
the Pharmacy Enhancement Award
for her community service work
and presenting a positive public
image of the profession.

Excel in TPA's Patient Counseling,
Innovative Pharmacy Project Competitions
UH
students Kandi Icenhower
and Simi Bassett
won first and second place,
respectively, in the TPA Patient
Counseling Competition at the
organization's annual meeting
in July. In addition, UH student
Ngocanh (Jennifer) Phan
and faculty member/advisor Kevin
W. Garey, Pharm.D.,
won second place in the Innovative
Pharmacy Project-Student competition
for "Proper Assessment
of Smoking Status for Hospitalized
Patients."

Launches Search for New Department
Chair
The
College of Pharmacy has launched
a search for a new Chair of
the Department of Clinical Sciences
& Administration. Interim
Chair and CSA faculty member
Russell E. Lewis,
Pharm.D., BCPS, recently decided
against pursuing the position
on a permanent basis in order
to devote more time to his infectious
diseases research. In addition
to administrative duties, the
successful candidate also will
hold a tenure-track faculty
appointment in the College.
Golf
Tournament Raises Nearly $13,000
for Students
Thanks
to the support and generosity
of UH College of Pharmacy alumni,
friends and sponsors, the 2007
Pharmacy Scholarship Golf Tournament
raised nearly $13,000 for student
awards and scholarships.
Including the approximately
$7,000 in available scholarship
money from the Golf Endowment
Fund, the total student support
for the 2007-08 academic year
will reach about $20,000.
Chow
Receives Grant for Chemotherapy

Diana
S-L. Chow, Ph.D.,
associate professor and director
of the Institute for Drug
Education & Research,
recently received a $45,000
grant from the Gillson Longenbaugh
Foundation for her research
into the transdermal delivery
of lactone-stabilized camptothecin
derivative for the treatment
of breast cancer.
FDA Conference
on Home Medical Devices Sept.
17-18
The
University of Houston Hilton
Hotel will host “Home
Healthcare Technology: Promoting
the Safe Migration of Medical
Devices into the Home,”
sponsored by the Food and Drug
Administration Center for Devices
and Radiological Health, on
Monday, Sept. 17, and Tuesday,
Sept. 18. Attendees will learn
how the government and home-care
industry can provide a safer
environment for medical devices.
Presentations will cover specific
devices, their safe operation,
labeling requirements and over-the-counter
devices; regulatory, accreditation
and reimbursement issues; and
risk-management strategies for
health-care providers and home

Curriculum Technology Projects
Get UH Grants
The
University of Houston has awarded
the College two grants for curriculum-based
technology projects: $20,000
to develop online elective courses
for the M.S. Pharmacy Administration
degree program and $25,000 to
create Web-based video broadcasts
(aka “vodcasts”)
for enhanced instruction in
pharmacy skills as well as physical
assessment and sterile products
labs.
