Pharm.D/Ph.D. Combined Degree Program

Eligibility for Admission

  • At least one year of completion of the UH Doctor of Pharmacy program

  • Overall grade point average of 3.0 or greater on a four point scale

  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores in the upper 25th percentile.

  • A conditional acceptance into the program may be granted without the GRE. However, the GRE must be taken by the end of the first semester in the PharmD/PhD program.

  • International students must meet the English requirements of the University and College, attaining minimal scores on the TOEFL of 550 (213 computer-based test) and minimal scores of 50 in one of the tests of spoken English (TSE or SPEAK), or 6.5 on the IELTS, or have earned a degree from an accredited U.S. institution.

    Note: Students may have to take additional courses to overcome deficiencies as determined by the program directors, prior to an unconditional acceptance into the program.

Program Application

Stipends

All students unconditionally admitted to the PharmD/PhD program are eligible to receive a stipend of $3,500/year for the three years of didactic course work and $21,000/year for three years of research work. Note: the student must repay stipends to the State of Texas if he or she has received a stipend and withdraws from the program for an unacceptable reason.

Academic Requirements

All PharmD/PhD degree candidates are required to take core courses and courses specific to their chosen research track (clinical pharmacology, basic pharmacology, medicinal chemistry or pharmaceutics). In addition, each candidate will perform a research project leading to a Ph.D. dissertation. It is anticipated that the total course of study (PharmD and PhD degrees) will be completed in a total of seven years upon entering the College of Pharmacy.
