Welcome to the Homepage for the Department of Pharmacological and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Houston College of Pharmacy. This site contains information about our faculty, their research, the seminar series, our graduate programs and admission requirements for degrees in Pharmaceutics and Pharmacology.
Our faculty has a long tradition of excellence and is continuously committed to delivering quality education to undergraduate (BSPS), professional (Pharm.D.), graduate (M.S. and Ph.D.) students and postdoctoral fellows. PPS graduates have pursued further postgraduate training at prestigious institutions, subsequently achieved national/international recognition for their research, and held distinguished positions in academia, industry, and government.
Our faculty is very dedicated to conducting cutting-edge biomedical and pharmaceutical research. Our research investigators have competitively received support from federal, state, industrial, private, and local funding agencies. The research findings and discoveries have led to publications in top-quality, peer-reviewed journals, and many patent awards.
Our current research emphases in the pharmacology area include cardiovascular, respiratory, and renal pharmacology; cellular signaling and transport; traditional medicine and natural products; design, synthesis and screening of novel drugs; drug abuse; behavioral neuroscience; and neurodegeneration. Our research emphases in the pharmaceutics area include drug formulation and delivery; drug absorption, metabolism, elimination, and toxicity; and pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of anti-cancer, anti-AIDS and anti-microbial drugs.
This Department also hosts three research institutes/centers: the Heart and Kidney Institute, Institute for Drug Education and Research, and the Center for Experimental Therapeutics & Pharmacoinformatics.
The University of Houston is located in close proximity to the world renowned Texas Medical Center (TMC), where the College of Pharmacy has operated a five-story, 50,000-square-foot satellite campus with research laboratories and classroom space since 1980. Our faculty, research investigators, and students have the benefit of establishing close collaboration, sharing and exchanging teaching and training programs with faculty/investigators from other affiliated institutions within the TMC.
We all have a common goal of achieving the highest standards in research, education and serving local, state, national, and international communities. As the Chair, I pledge to continuously build this fine Department on its strength and to make sure that it is the choice of place for employment, for conducting research, and for promoting education and learning.
