The Texas State Board of Pharmacy rules require all pharmacy technicians who compound sterile products to complete a minimum of 40 hours of instruction and experience in the compounding of sterile products. This training must be a single course, and must include competency evaluation and written and practical testing, in specified areas of sterile compounding. In addition, training must be taught by someone who has completed the required training. Training received in courses sponsored by an ACPE provider may be transferred to other pharmacies. The University of Houston College of Pharmacy offers an ACPE approved course, Aseptic Techniques for Pharmacy Technicians, through a cadre of instructors, who teach this course in various health care facilities and community colleges. This Instructor Course is designed to prepare pharmacists or certified pharmacy technicians, who have completed an ACPE approved aseptic techniques course (20 hours for pharmacists, 40 hours for technicians) to teach the Aseptic Techniques for Pharmacy Technicians course, under the auspices of the University of Houston.
The Instructor's Course is scheduled once a year, or when 7 or more are interested in the class.
Upon completion of this course, the pharmacist should be able to:
- Describe materials needed to teach a compounded sterile products preparation course.
- Identify and use printed, audio/visual and internet-based education resources that supplement materials for facilitating learning in a sterile products preparation program for technicians.
- Describe assessment tools for use in the didactic and experiential laboratory components of the program.
This ACPE approved program is intended for aseptic techniques “certified” pharmacists or certified pharmacy technicians who want to become instructors for the University of Houston College of Pharmacy’s ACPE approved course, Aseptic Techniques for Pharmacy Technicians. Pharmacist or Pharmacy Technician participant must be “I.V. certified” through an approved ACPE course that complies with TSBP Pharmacy Rules.
Pharmacist and Pharmacy Technicians attending this program must have completed a 20-hour (40 hours for technicians) ACPE approved aseptic techniques certification course recognized by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy.
