A structured program designed to meet the requirements of the Texas State Board of Pharmacy for pharmacists who prepare sterile products.
12 Home Study Hours + 8 Contact Hours = 20 Hours Total
Upon completion of this course, the pharmacist should be able to:
- Demonstrate the proper mixing and handling of parenteral drugs.
- Discuss the different parenteral drug therapy delivery systems.
- Discuss and demonstrate ability to use a laminar flow hood.
- Use parenteral drug reference sources to determine compatibilities and stabilities of admixtures.
- Identify the different types of intravenous access devices.
- Prepare a care plan for monitoring patients receiving intravenous drugs in the home care setting.
- Discuss Texas state pharmacy rules related to the preparations of intravenous and other compounded products.
- Practice safe handling of chemotherapeutic agents.
This program is intended for pharmacists who desire to increase their knowledge of aseptic techniques and the compounding and dispensing of intravenous medication, cytotoxic, and hazardous drugs. Topics will also include basic principles of parenteral nutrition and fluid and electrolyte balance, venous access devices, and determining intravenous admixture compatibilities.
